Phrasal verbs
1.) TAKE
Take off = leave the ground
Exp sentences : The plane took off at 6 a.m.
Take after = To resemble, in appearance or character
Exp sentences : Hendry really take after his dad.
Take on = Hire or engage staft
Exp sentences : Business is good so the company is taking on extra
staff.
Take out = To remove or extract
Exp sentences: She took out a pen to note the address.
2.) BREAK
Break away = Escape from captivity.
Exp sentences : A few horses brook away from the paddock.
Break down = Go out of order , cease to function./ lose control of
one's emotions.
Exp sentences : Harry car broke down so he had to take the bus.
: The woman broke down when the police told her
son had died.
Break up = Come to the end (marriage or relationship)
Exp sentences : after her marriage broke up, Natalia went to
live in Paris.
Break into = enter by force
Exp sentences : Burglar broke into the house around midnight.
3.) MAKE
Make up = invent (excuse or story)
Exp sentences : some employees make up excuses when they
arrive late for work.
4.) BLOW
Blow up = To explode or to be destroyed by an explosion.
Exp sentences : The terrorist said the bomb would blow up
at 8 o'clock.
: The racing car blew up after crashed into the fence.
5.) PUT
Put off : postpone or arrange a late date.
Exp sentences : The meeting was put off because of the strike.
: We are putting off our trip until January because
of the hurricane.
Put out : Extinguish
Exp sentences : The bombs took a long time to put out the fire.
6.) WORK
Work out = Do physical exercise or find solution or calculate
something.
Exp sentences : Harry work out twice a week at the gym club.
: We have to work out the total cost before we buy
the house.
